What is botanical pounding?

Petals and leaves are the paint. The mallet is the brush.

Botanical pounding, known in old Chinese as chuí cǎo yìn huā, is a folk craft that is both beautiful and useful. Flowers and leaves serve as the pigment: you hammer them, and their sap and vein patterns transfer onto fabric or paper.

Everything comes from nature. The materials are the plants themselves, and no machine is involved. Every flower and leaf differs in shape and moisture, and every blow differs in force and angle, so no two pieces ever come out the same.

“Pound grass, print flowers.” Method, pigment and result in four characters.

Folk dyeing

Folk accounts trace it to the Ming and Qing dynasties, as a village way of printing cloth with whatever grew nearby. It has recently come back as a hands-on craft.

ABROAD Hapazome

In Japan it is called tataki-zome; in English, hapazome or flower pounding.

Where the colour comes from

Each blow breaks open plant cells. The pigments inside flow out with the sap and soak into the cotton. The colour you get depends on which pigment the plant carries.

Found in almost every green leaf. It gives the classic green print, which slowly mellows to olive or khaki over time.

The purples, blues, pinks and reds of pansy, hydrangea, cosmos and red maple. It reacts to acidity and metal ions, so the same flower can surprise you.

The yellows and oranges of tickseed, marigold and the pansy’s eye. Fairly stable, and shared by many traditional dye plants.

A field guide to printable plants

Common plants for pounding, shown as they print. Hover over a card, or tap it on a phone, to see the fresh plant. The plants on the night depend on what arrives.

Six steps to a print

Pick fresh, thin, juicy petals and leaves. Thick, waxy or hairy ones give little colour.

Lay out your design, leaves vein-side down. Slip a plastic sheet inside the tote so colour doesn’t bleed through to the back.

Cover each plant with tape, or press an acrylic board over it, so nothing slides while you work.

Work from the centre outward with steady, even blows, giving tips and edges a few extra. Keep your fingers clear of the mallet.

Peel off the tape and brush away the plant residue. Your print is underneath.

  6. 晾干Dry & keepSTEP 6

Let it air-dry. Don’t wash your piece, and keep it out of strong sun.

Everyone gets a cotton handkerchief to practise on. Find your rhythm there before you start on the real thing.

Keep the hand holding the cloth well away from the mallet head. Slow and steady beats fast.
